Tribute to Another Master Trumpeter- Lee Morgan

Lee Morgan has always been an influence for Gabriel Mark Hasselbach, part of a grand five that shaped his music and that he still listens to almost daily. Lee, Blue Mitchell, Clifford Brown, Donald Byrd, and Freddie Hubbard all hold a permanent place in his musical psyche.

Here is a little tribute, a truncated video of a Jazz Messengers date from 1961, with Art Blakey, Wayne Shorter, Bobby Timmons, and Jymie Merritt. Everyone but Lee is mostly edited out of this long original concert (apologies in advance). Hey, it's all about the trumpet here!

Lee Morgan was a stalwart of the driving jazz-meets-funk-meets-blues grooves produced by Blue Note in the 1960's. A flashy player of enormous technique and invention, he became the natural successor to Clifford Brown, emerging on the jazz scene shortly after Brownie's death in 1956. Morgan quickly developed his own style, fusing classic bebop motifs with more modern rhythms, harmonies and melodies.

Born in Philadelphia on July 10, 1938, he began his trumpet studies with a private instructor, and continued them at Mastbaum High School for the Arts, where he also played the alto horn. A fan of jazz from an early age, he was exposed to a wide variety of live music in the vibrant Philadelphia music scene, which had produced such notables as John Coltrane, Benny Golson, the Heath brothers, and many others.

By the time he was 15, Morgan was leading his own group with bassist James "Spanky" DeBrest as his partner. He was also taking part in Tuesday night workshops at the Music City club, which brought him into early contact with Miles Davis and his primary early influence, Clifford Brown. After Morgan graduated from Mastbaum in 1956, he and DeBrest subbed with the Jazz Messengers when Art Blakey arrived in Philadelphia short two musicians. "Spanky stayed on," Morgan explained in the liner notes to his first Blue Note album. "I could have stayed too, but I didn't want to sign a contract, so I left after two weeks. Very soon after that, Dizzy Gillespie returned from his South American tour. Morgan's career took off when he joined Dizzy’s big band at the age of 17.

 Lee Morgan

Dizzy was always a generous teacher, and allowed his young protégé plenty of solo space. This provided Morgan an excellent opportunity to gain experience before his return to Blakey's group in 1958 after Dizzy’s group disbanded. That year he recorded, Candy, his first of twenty-five Blue Note recordings as a leader, and though he was only 18 at the time, Morgan had already attracted attention with brassy acrobatic solos that heralded the arrival of a significant, new talent. While working with the Jazz Messengers, Morgan formed a great partnership with tenorist Benny Golson, and their shared sense of timing and musical rapport is obvious on the album Moanin', both on the title track and on numbers such as Blues March. Morgan shared the Messengers frontline with Golson, Hank Mobley and then Wayne Shorter until a heroin problem forced him to leave the band in 1961, (when he was replaced by Freddie Hubbard).

He returned to his native Philadelphia for a few years, where he maintained a low profile while battling his addiction, working occasionally with saxophonist Jimmy Heath. He returned to New York in 1963, where he recorded, The Sidewinder, on the Blue Note label with sideman Joe Henderson, This was Morgan’s greatest commercial success. He entered his greatest period, recording one memorable album after another, writing "Ceora" and "Speedball" and spending a second period with Blakey (1964-65).

Lee Morgan

He also recorded widely as a sideman on many classic jazz albums such as Gillespie's Night In Tunisia, John Coltrane's Blue Trane, Grachan Moncur's Evolution and dates for others, including Curtis Fuller, Philly Joe Jones, Wynton Kelly, Clifford Jordan, Hank Mobley and Wayne Shorter. Morgan was as comfortable unleashing dynamic displays of instrumental virtuosity on triple time blues as he was displaying controlled sensitivity and passion on ballads. His style included elements drawn from Dizzy Gillespie and Clifford Brown, but his own wide, crackling tone, his use of bluesy phrasing and effects, searing high register, human-voiced half-valve effects, and his dancing, funky, timing, was the essence of hard-bop.

Morgan's later bands featured Bennie Maupin or Billy Harper on saxophone, and while the modal jazz direction taken by many other bands became more prominent in his compositions, Morgan remained at heart a hard-bop trumpet player.

Lee Morgan’s fast lane lifestyle ended on February 19, 1972, when he was shot dead by his common-law wife, Helen More, during a performance at Slug's in New York, ending his life at the age of 33.

In 1991, Lee Morgan was inducted into the Down Beat Hall of Fame.

A brief (and rare) Political Announcement

I eat, breathe, and sleep music - mostly jazz - it is my life's calling.

It may seem to be 'all about me' sometimes, but I make a conscious effort to help friends, family, and others, in this field and others, and to have an ongoing Social Conscience. It occurred to me long ago that if I didn't take the helm to get my music message out there and share my accomplishments, that it would be unlikely that I could sustain a career and keep doing what I do. With that in mind, I try to remain humble in my posts, and in receiving accolades, and try to keep my specific charms in perspective within the long history of music- past, present, and future. I am happy just to be effective! There are many with a truly stellar history who really deserve it!

That said, I firmly believe it is not 'all about me' (nor you), and that we all have to be aware of our world in motion, distress, and in conflict (as well as joy and brotherhood). Not that we need to live fearful lives, but we do need to be aware and live integrated lives- because we may lose whatever choices and freedoms we have earned and learned if we don't act to protect our freedoms in an informed manner.

My rare political message is one of thinking locally as well as globally and applying egalitarian values to everything you do. Change what you can change, and support the others who can make changes. I do not offer specifics very often, but since we are here, how about a few?

GET INVOLVED. BE IN THE KNOW. MAKE A DIFFERENCE!!! Start here:

1.  Transit Plebiscite Pros and Cons (this is how you weigh the pluses and minuses of Vancouver's proposed transit tax - personally I vote 'NO')

2. Stop the KOCH BROTHERS. They are the money behind Citizens United (in the US - which allows unfair, unlimited funding of Presidential candidates by the uber-rich)

and also behind the Oil Sands in Canada (whose oil will it be and to what end?). Read More

3.  Learn more about ISIS/ ISIL. The world is facing a global crisis and ongoing war that rivals Hitler's rampage. However the game has changed- instead of facing a one headed monster snake, the world is faced with a multi-headed monster that can easily hide in the coat-tails of its Islamic generality, and does not need an army of tanks and jackbooted soldiers to accomplish horrendous acts of terror. Just today, breaking news re: West Edmonton Mall and Halifax...... Don't know to what I refer? That's the point! What about Bill C-51? (Bill C-51 gives security forces too much power for too little reason. It is worth fighting.) THINK. ACT. SHARE.

4. Subscribe online to The Daily KOS (below), to keep barometer readings on the insufferable US Political chaos and stupidity, which will ultimately affect us all as Canadians as it unfolds in our backyard and shapes Stephen Harper's (non-transparent) agenda. Even a quick browse will bend your mind!

There are things you can do to make a difference, and being aware is one!

RIP Clark Terry

Clark Terry passed away at 94, and is considered a seminal and influential trumpeter by all counts. His distinct tone and deft style were his trademarks that served him well over the years. His unique style of scat singing earned him the moniker 'Mumbles', which influenced the genre itself and fans and followers such as Bill Cosby.

Rather than fill in the text body of this post with words, just google him for a plethora of options to learn more about this great musician.

Here are a few video clips of this legendary performer:

With Oscar Peterson (Mack The Knife around the five-minute mark).

The Clark Terry/Bob Brookmeyer Quintet, and host the famous Humphrey Lyttelton..... incredibly, it was filmed by BBC TV:

On the Tonight Show

And with Aretha Franklin and Herbie Hancock

It just keeps getting better!

Well, PROPULSION, the first single off my new CD Open Invitation is heading into orbit!

After 8 weeks of bubbling under as a 'New and Active', PROPULSION debuted on Billboard Feb 17 at #24! Then moved up again on Billboard and SmoothJazz.com the following week.

I should mention that my co-producer Lew Laing Jr also produced Melina in the #23 spot- Lew seems to have it all sewn up!

I seem to be getting lots of love these days, and just today two from Southern Ontario's (and arguably all of Canada's) hotspot for contemporary jazz, Wave.fm.

Comments like : " ....an album that raises the bar for coolness, style, chicness, and a compelling elegant vibe", and "...this Vancouver-based musical master plays with the big boys because he can. Whether trumpet, flute or fluglehorn (oh how I love that word!) GMH proves time and time again that he is worthy of every accolade"  kind of make the hair on the back of my neck stand up, but I'll do what I can to live up to the high marks I have been given .... :-)

Check out both reviews from the program Director, Stu Berketo, and the Morning Host, Vickie VanDyke. (more reviews below)

From the USA:

"Gabriel Mark Hasselbach's new CD Open Invitation, on which he wrote all the tunes and plays trumpet, flugel, alto and C flutes, valve bone, and EVI, is a tour de force of arranging and production..... Gabriel sounds great on everything.... no easy task, and should be really proud of this one! You'll find yourself humming these tunes when you least expect it!" ~ Randy Brecker -multiple Grammy winning trumpeter (Brecker Bros, etc)

Gabriel Mark Hasselbach - Open Invitation   4/4

"Canadian trumpeter Gabriel Mark Hasselbach returns on Open Invitation with his proven formula for success: a cadre of talented guest artists, fresh, funky rhythms and at least one soulful vocal track. "Lovelight" spotlights Hasselbach with vocals from Dee & Brittani Cole. Bob Baldwin (p) shines on "Charmed Life"; Bob Mintzer (sax) adds spice on "Let It Slide" and Cory Weeds (sax) stars on "Carte Blanche". These are a few of the highlights in yet another winning set from GMH." ~ D. Oscar  Groomes, O's Place Jazz Newsletter

".....Riveting sound ......solid groove-packed ..... loaded with both soothing and searingly funky jazz just like we C-jazzers like it. After his scorching 2012 Kissed By the Sun release, who could expect anything less from this prolific trumpeter who not only cranks out his own quality albums but is featured on albums by other top-notch artists, as well. ....Hasselbach also has some straight-ahead work under his belt – and you may be able to detect some of that influence ....much to the delight of the C-jazzers of the world. This album, which also features him on flugelhorn and flutes, has some cool contributors like keyboardists Greg Manning, Cal Harris Jr., and Bob Baldwin, and saxman Bob Mintzer of Yellowjackets fame. They all make this one cool, flowing party. Suffice it to say that Hasselbach not only consistently has a handle on the C-jazz groove but again works it to perfection here on Open Invitation. ~ Ronald Jackson-  TheSmoothJazzRide.com    read full review here

A review  from Canada:

"I recently received trumpeter Gabriel Hasselbach's new cd Open Invitation and I highly recommend it!  It's fast, classy and progressive and full of great all-star guest performers. I can see why the first single release, Propulsion, with special guest Greg Manning is sweeping the jazz world - it's just great music! I guarantee months of repeat playing of Gabriel's new music on my jazz program! Keep up the good work and great music Gabriel!"  ~ Bill Sharpe, host of Newfoundland's only jazz program Cool Jazz On The Coast

From Switzerland:

Gabriel - Open Invitation (2014)
Trumpet player Gabriel Mark Hasselbach - currently calling himself just Gabriel - comes up with an awesome album full of memorable tracks and tons of first-rate guest players, like Bob Mintzer, Bob Baldwin, Greg Manning and many others. The music is groovy and offers a lot of variety, the musicianship is on a high level, and the smooth trumpet and flugelhorn playing of the leader holds it all together. Great stuff!  ~  Peter Boehi Smoothvibes.com Switzerland

From Germany:

"With Open Invitation it becomes apparent that Gabriel needn't shy away from comparison with any other trumpeter in the world."

A full weekend of music & don't forget Valentine's Day!

We don't sweat the small stuff, and we can all sleep when we are dead.... let's make life's moment's count!

OK, so the weather has just been 'meh', but it could easily be 'argghhh!' if Vancouver wasn't at the foot of that Pineapple Express.... let's all count our blessings, and breathe a sigh of relief that we aren't digging out from snow and that Fukashimi hasn't propogated three eyed fish (yet)...

That brings me to this weekend, arguably one of the romantic signposts in our culture, well spaced between other holidays to allow Hallmark time to restock all the shelves with current product.... of course, I am referring to Valentine's Day. He may have been a Saint, I am not sure anymore because his friends just call him Val....

Music is our lifeblood (which is certainly the right color for this holiday), and even before Valentine's festivities get underway, there is a ramp-up of great music (and art) options. I will share:

I am not superstitious, so it bothers me not in the least that it is Friday the 13th! So here is what's shakin':

I have swapped my regular Saturday night at Ten Ten Tapas (1010 Beach Ave, on the seawall) with Friday's romantic stalwart Rossi (on spanish guitar), and I will be holding court there Friday with my funky and classic brand of jazz. Start time 6:30 pm, make a rezzie!

Now, Saturday is PACKED!

First off, I'll be heading to renowned artist Raymond Chow's farewell sendoff at The Archer and Horseman Gallery at 1 pm (208 E 16th Ave); then at 2 pm I head to the Vancouver Public Library where I will be performing with the Urbana Big Band from 3 - 4:30 in the Alice McKay Room downstairs; after that I race outta there to Steveston where I am performing a special Valentines Day event at Shady Island Bar and Grill, right on the waterfront! It is not strictly a couples oriented event, and it goes early (6 - 9 pm), so you can still get your romance in later if you like. Great food and drink, and lots of special guests including Linda Szentes' Tribute to Ella Fitzgerald and more...... make a rezzie!

Hope you can make it!!!

Guest guitarist from Toronto- ROB TARDIK this Saturday

This Saturday at Ten Ten Tapas (in Vancouver) will be extra exciting as my special guest performer will be Rob Tardik, an award winning latin jazz guitarist from Toronto.

Rob has had a number of highlights in his career including Billboard chart hits.... Rob and I have recorded together on my albums and me on his.... very simpatico!

I'll be on my usual arsenal of horns, trumpet, flute, flugelhorn, and we will start at 7 pm and wind up around 10.

Don't let the weather deter you from a rare chance to see and hear this cat.... watch:
