Music update for July 11, 12, 13

Well..... I just got back this week from Jazz On The Mountain at Blue, in Ontario. I had the good fortune to play in Gino Vanelli's band for his show, then had my performance, with guest guitarist Rob Tardik. The highlight for me was seeing, hearing, and hanging with the iconic Yellow Jackets. I taped some of their master classes and performance, and will share soon on this blog.

This weekend is jam packed, and I certainly hope to see you at one of my new (and regular) events, because next weekend I will be in Winnipeg performing at the Lyric Theatre, an ongoing outdoor festival there. Rob Tardik and Walle Larsson will join in- they were both on my last album, Kissed By The Sun.

This Friday in the day, 11:30 -2:30, I will be performing at a cool event (it includes free BBQ- what's not to like?) for high end goldsmith Jose Jewellery Inc,  #3, 1920 - 152nd Street, in White Rock. Fun summertime dealio... Mark Madriga, our favorite weatherman will be there, too. Drop by if you are in the area...

Friday evening I am performing at The Hard Rock Casino, by the Port Mann Bridge- it turned into a cool place since the new owners renovated and changed the spin. I will be in the Unlisted Lounge with two shows starting at 9:30. Cool vibe in the Unlisted Lounge- and pretty good food, too!

Saturday afternoon I join Soultrain Express at the Lux Lounge at 4:00, as an adjunct to Billy Dixon`s already groovin`show.

Then Saturday eve at 7:30 I am back at Ten Ten Tapas, and this week the multi-talented Willy Ward will be appearing with a special set. Come check out what kind of mayhem we get into! Billy Dixon and a few more always come in to lend a vocal chord or two as well.... You gotta try the ribs!

Sunday is jazz brunch starting at 11;30, and I`m telling you, the food and view can`t be beat. The music is a perfect underscoring as well!

Come see me this weekend, as I will be away next week.... I do hope to see you sooner than later....

cheers!

Gabriel

The way we 'enjoy' music- update

Mashable reports that "Google announced Tuesday that it is acquiring the much-loved music service Songza in a bid to ramp up its Play Music offering. In the coming months, Google will 'explore ways to bring what you love about Songza to Google Play Music.' The search giant also says it will also look at ways to bring Songza's features into YouTube and other Google products.

OMG, there goes the neighborhood (just kidding)... (maybe) ...

Great new tour dates announced plus this holiday weekend events

Summer has hit and it is Festival Season! Hope you have enjoyed some great talent at the Jazz fest in Vancouver- I experienced some awesome artist's shows such as Arturo Sandoval at the Vogue. There were several other notable shows there, and that venue has really great sound as well. Lots of opportunity to be wowed across the city.....

Canada Day is almost upon us, and there is even more music to experience everywhere. Be sure to check out the return of Amanda Wood at Ten Ten Tapas, Vancouver's coolest little jazz bistro, right on the seawall at 1010 Beach Ave. Amanda played the inaugural opening there in November, and I have been performing there since December for New Year's Eve, and on Saturday Eves and Sunday Jazz Brunches.

I will be there at Ten Ten Tapas today at 7:30 pm, and tomorrow for jazz brunch at 11:30 am. There will be special guests including LJ Mounteney, Lisa Fennell, Billy Dixon, and more.... The patio is awesome and is heated and rain protected for your enjoyment even in iffy weather, the view postcard perfect, and the food is succulent and well priced!
Before I head to Ten Ten today, I will perform with Soultrain Express at the Lux Lounge (1180 Howe St) at 4 pm. This is the rockingest 80's party band in the city.... then as I said, we move the WHOLE party over to Ten Ten Tapas at 7:00 pm.... Come by this weekend because....

This will be my last weekend at Ten Ten for two weeks, as I head back east to Jazz On The Mountain at Blue for my feature show on July 5, and for a performance with the iconic Gino Vanelli, which will be challenging and awesome! See a recent show of his:
And this is what my show at Blue Mountain will look like:

This week! Ten Ten Tapas & Jazz fest line-up

A great weekend has begun! Jazz Fest is underway, and the weather is gettin' good again- the patio is open!

Ten Ten Tapas has emerged as the most notable live jazz venue in Vancouver.

Rossi and his guitar is on fire on Fridays, I am rockin' the ribjoint on Saturday eves and playing it cool for Sunday brunches, and there are lots more great performances by Vancouver's finest throughout the week and for upcoming Canada Day!

Be there or be square, and be sure to make a rezzie!

Check out my latest video while you are at it!

R.I.P. Horace Silver

Horace Silver was a succinct and calm voice amongst the sturm and drang that often informed the bop community. His approach was distilled and erudite, and he was one of my favorite voices of his generation. He was on the first record I ever bought, and I went on to record some of his material such a Senor Blues, on my Swingin'Affair release @ http://myiesstore.com/gabrieljazz/

Horace Silver Dies at 85

  News
By Jeff Tamarkin

NEA Jazz Master Horace Silver, an extraordinarily creative pianist and composer who brought soulfulness, a rhythmic spring and what he called a “meaningful simplicity” to hard bop, died of natural causes June 18 at his home in New Rochelle, N.Y. Silver was 85. A mainstay of the Blue Note Records label throughout the label’s heyday—the early ’50s until 1980—Silver leaves behind a sizable and highly cherished body of work, highlighted by his 1965 album (and its evocative title track, now a jazz standard) Song for My Father, which continues to turn up on lists of essential jazz recordings nearly a half century after its release..

Father's Day is so special that we are doing it TWICE!

WHIPPED POTATO - crème fraiche, butter & chives

GRILLED GREEN BEANS - garlic & chili oil, salt & pepper

SLOW ROAST C.A.B. PRIME RIB - salt pepper & mustard crust, horse radish, Yorkshire pudding, natural jus

Be sure and make your reservations so you won't be disappointed.

This is the week in music that was- and it is not over yet!!

Lots happened this week and even more to come, especially for Father's Day!

I had lots of action on the Billboard charts lately as featured soloist on Bob Baldwin's Chameleon 3000. That tune is blazing up the charts and racking up sales (for Bob that is!), and my name is getting out there. Ubiquity is my goal!

You can always find my updated schedule at www.gabrieljazz.com/shows.htm

This Saturday, I am helping out my good friend Dr Tony Wong with his Burnaby Vision Care grand opening at 3801 Hastings. What a great new store with the largest selection of  eyewear around. Jazz from 10 am to 4 pm.

I will be joining Billy Dixon and Soultrain Express at the Lux Lounge (1080 Howe) as soon as I can get there, around 4:30- 7 pm, and then I perform at Ten Ten Tapas at 7:30, just around the corner at 1010 Beach Ave. We always have lots of guests to make the event special. A new set of tunes will be debuted! And don't forget the super yummy food and cozy patio! Billy Dixon and Lisa Fennell will sing, so c'mon down Luis and Nick, Cecille and Riley, Brock and Gerry, Willy and Daryl!

In three weeks I will be in Ontario at Blue Mountain Jazz Fest, in the Georgian Bay/Collingwood/cottage country area, I will be performing with Gino Vanelli for his show on July 4, and then have my own featured show July 5. I will stick around on Sunday to hear the Yellowjackets......

July 20 I will be at the Lyric Theatre (Outdoor Festival) with Rob Tardik and Walle Larsson for the Canadian Brass and Steel show that we put together.

During this time, except the above mentioned dates, I will be starting a new regular gig at the Hard Rock Casino in Coquitlam on Friday nights- come down, you will like the lounge I am at!

However, I am still holding court at Ten Ten Tapas every Saturday night at 7:30, and also for Sunday Jazz Brunch at 11:30 am. This coming Father's Day will be extraordinary, as I will play brunch, as well as dinner from 7-9. A fantastic prime rib dinner is planned for all the carnivorous, under appreciated Fathers out there! LJ Mounteney and Melissa Howell will be guesting as vocalists extraordinaire!

Also, I recently launched my new FaceBook music store, that has ALL by back catalog available as digital downloads AND hard disks.... check it out! There are guests on my dozen cds that include Dee Daniels, Paul Horn, Nancy Ruth, Christine Duncan, Warren Hill, Miles Black, Amanda Wood, Brian Bromberg, Chuck Loeb, Jeff Lorber, Marc Antoine, and many more!

See you soon!

Saturday and Sunday Performance Schedule- Hats Off!!

Hi Friends,

It is perfect weather in Vancouver with no end in sight! This is a perfect time to enjoy music in all its glory, with added bonuses...

Sat. June 7 is the yearly Hats Off Day Festival in Burnaby Heights. Hastings Street from Boundary Rd. to Gamma Ave. is cordoned off as a street fair (that's at least 10 blocks), and there is a parade at 10 am, followed by food, music, activities and big fun till 4 pm!

The Mainstage is at Esmond and Hastings, one block east of Boundary Rd. Performing this year at 11 am is the juggernaut 18 pc URBANA Big Band under the direction of Robin Shier. Lots of high energy tunes and strong solos, including myself ;)

Also performing will be North Burnaby's up and coming young jazz combo Soular, with a jam session to follow. I will be performing original material from my albums during my set around 2:00 pm, and we have other performers slated to appear, such as Lisa Fennell, Chris Haas, Billy Dixon, Jessica Ng, and more!

It will be a full day of music for anyone interested, and it is just getting started......

After Hats Off Day Fest, I head over to the Lux Lounge at 1180 Howe to perform with the rocking-est band in the city, Billy Dixon and the Soultrain Express till 7 pm, then on over to Ten Ten Tapas (1010 Beach, on the seawall) for the start of my gig at 7:30. The food is insanely good (and not expensive), and the view is something to be marveled at. The Lux crowd heads over to Ten Ten as well and carries on the fun til 10:30. (You can too!).

I am back at Ten Ten Tapas for Sunday Jazz Brunch the next day, and we always welcome the large open patio and sunshine. Same great food, music, and view! Come meet the amazing chef, Matthew!

Then, the following weekend June 14-15, besides my 'Rockin' The Ribjoint' Saturday night, I return to Ten Ten Tapas for Father's Day, for two seatings- brunch and dinner, (featuring a fab prime rib)Perhaps it is time to give Papa a complete, neat, sweet treat?

Hope to see you this weekend and next!

Here is a typical five star review of Ten Ten Tapas from a web post:

"We went on a Saturday night based on a recommendation of friends. The live jazz was the key draw for us, and it certainly was great with a superb jazz duo, and 2 drop-in guest singers. What a treat in such a small venue! The food was a very nice surprise. Tapas are our preferred way to dine for a slow meal, and the every item we chose was very enjoyable. Finally, the wine list had a good selection of reasonably-priced wines, without the sometimes standard markup of 3x for red. We'll be back!"
