Great music on the horizon, and a very busy week ahead....

Below you will find a snippet from a tune on my new cd which will be out soon. Here is the tag to Init2Winit, featuring two of Vancouver's Finest players, guitarist Adam Rohrlick and saxman from Five Alarm Funk, Dameian Walsh. Hope you dig the wild vibe!

Today I perform with Billy Dixon at Lux Lounge at 1189 Howe at 4 pm, then head over to Ten Ten Tapas for my regular 7 pm ROCKING THE RIBJOINT Saturday gig, which is always a perfect trifecta: Food, Friends, and Fun! TONIGHT THERE IS  A SPECIAL with Ribs and any glass of wine for $24! Guests tonight will include Lisa Fennell, Billy Dixon, and more...


Sunday I am at the Hard Rock Casino in the Unlisted Lounge from 1-5 pm, and if October is your birthday month, come before 2 pm to claim your gifts and enter the sweepstakes for the Birthday Folks only!

Next week is the big one! HALLOWEEN FRIDAY I am performing with my full band at 1789.ca,  the great restaurant and music bar on Comox @ Denman. (Easy parking, too!) Costumes are optional, but funny hats and noses are likely. Come hear some first time performances of new tracks from my upcoming album Open Invitation, and check out the new lineup of hotshots I will have with me: Olaf Deshield on guitar; Brian Scott on bass; Jason DeCouto on keys, and my old standby Don Powrie on drums.

Be there or be square... it's a perfect way to spend a freewheeling Halloween!



SPECIAL ADDITION to tonight's Candlelight Dinner 7 pm

The owners of Ten Ten Tapas, Derek and Diane Oelmann, and their master chef Matthew Phillip, have created a special menu and a really fun event to celebrate 'Offtober', BC Hydro's month long Power Smart energy saving promotion.

The response has been tremendous, and as an added bonus, I am going to give a sneak preview of my new album, which won't actually be unveiled until after Christmas. I will mostly just be enjoying dungeoness crab from tonight's special menu, and doing a little playing of my horns, but for those in attendance, I will have my full album OPEN INVITATION playing over the house system. We will also have a few special guest performers tonight, including Lisa Fennell and Gerry Boey.....

Come and enjoy a jazzy candlelit night out that won't break the bank!

Be sure to save Halloween (Friday Oct 31) for a very spooktacular (but still jazzy&funky) 8 pm performance at Club 1789.

It is situated on Comox @Denman, next to the Coast Hotel. I have a new crew on deck, including Olaf Deshield on guitar, Jason DeCouto on keys, stalwart Donny Powrie on drums, and local groovemaster Brian Scott on bass. We will be debuting some tunes from the new album, of which advance copies will be available Dec 1, with a full worldwide release Jan 18, 2015.

A long weekend moment in the sun -tonight!

Hey Everyone,

The Japanese typhoon never dumped its promised residual wetness on us, so here we are on a VERY summery Saturday in mid October!

Make hay while the sun shines, and come on out to Ten Ten Tapas tonight at 7 pm where I will be playing... the waterfront patio will be warm and inviting and your food, service, and entertainment will be topflight!

Riley Inge should be coming down to sit in, and we have a few other superstars like Cecile Larochelle, Marlin Ramazzini, Joe Chappel, and Willy Ward that will come down if they can get away from their busy schedules. Gerry Boey may also drop in after his recent tour of Spain!

This is the PERFECT way to usher in a Thanksgiving Long Weekend...... On the seawall at 1010 Beach Ave (near the Burrard Bridge overpass)

I will be performing at Hard Rock Casino on United Blvd in Coquitlam tonight, Friday, starting at 9:30 pm... come and have a little free spirited fun!

And tomorrow I am back at 7 pm at my longstanding regular haunt Ten Ten Tapas.... where I am always Rockin' The Ribjoint. 
Special guests always join me and we have a great time, guest musicians and singers welcome. Awesome food, view, and music! 

I will be there for new Year's Eve, so book early!

This week in the world of Gabriel Jazz

Well here we are, after an awesome summer, the first day of Autumn come and gone, a little damper in our bodies, but not in our spirits!

A good weekend is planned, so please join me!

Tonight, Thursday I have a trifecta on the go...
First, at 6 pm Sylvia and I are heading to an Art Opening at the Archer and Horseman Gallery at 208 E 16th, to take in the trio of amazing artists:
Raymond, Mischa, and Philip... Tim Chow is having his birthday and will also be playing music there. I just might sit in....


After that, around 7 pm we head over to The Fairview (Broadway and Laurel) where John Nolan has performed steadily for over 20 years. I will definitely sit in! John plays great drums and always has a crack band...

Around 9 pm we will head over to Ten Ten Tapas (1010 Beach Ave, on the seawall), where the little lady with alotta larynx, LJ Mounteney is performing with Ron Thompson..... they make a great musical team and yes, I will bring my horn....

TOMORROW, Friday, I am at the Hard Rock Casino in Coquitlam at 9:30 pm in The Unlisted Lounge. This is a fun little gig with lots of friends dropping by for a drink and some tasty food. 

THEN ON Saturday eve at 7 pm, I am at MY regular gig at Ten Ten Tapas, and special guests such as Billy Dixon and Lisa Fennell are slated to perform. BTW, I am producing Lisa's first album, due in the spring).

FOLLOWING THAT, on Sunday I am back at the Hard Rock, where they throw a big party for ANYONE who has a birthday in September! Regular patrons are welcome, but if you are a September Baby, come to The Asylum at 12:45 pm and register for big prizes. I play there at 1 pm, and move over to The Unlisted from 2 until 5pm.

Kenny Wheeler, Trumpeter and Flugelhornist, Is Dead at 84

Kenny Wheeler, the trumpet and flugelhorn great who was born in Canada but spent most of his life in Britain, where he became a major jazz star, died Sept. 18 at age 84. The place and cause of death were not announced but Wheeler had been in ill health for some time; he’d been living in a London nursing home and had recently been hospitalized. Wheeler’s versatile approach ultimately allowed him to work within various milieus, including big band, post-bop, fusion and free jazz. As a leader he recorded albums for ECM, CAM Jazz and other labels and he served as a sideman or collaborator with a range of diverse artists including Keith Jarrett, Anthony Braxton, Bill Frisell and Dave Holland. As an educator, Wheeler was a founding patron of the Junior Jazz program at Britain’s Royal Academy of Music and was the subject of a yearlong exhibition at the Academy Museum.

Joe Sample, Keyboardist and Composer, Dies at 75

Joe Sample, the keyboardist and composer who co-founded the Crusaders—originally the Jazz Crusaders—and flourished as a solo artist in the wake of that band’s breakup, died Sept. 12 in his hometown of Houston, Tex. Sample was 75 and was known to have suffered two heart attacks in recent decades. Sample’s artistry transcended genre. With the Crusaders he moved seamlessly between hard bop and, later, a more R&B-rooted funk that ultimately prompted the group to drop the word jazz from its name. On his own, primarily on acoustic piano, Sample’s lyrical phrasing and crystalline sound could be found on recordings made as a leader and in collaborative situations, including three duo albums with singer Randy Crawford in the 2000s. He was also a prolific sideman, working not only with jazz musicians but top names in the pop, rock and R&B worlds.

Busy coupla weeks, and it continues!

Hey All!

I am just returning from New Orleans where I played the French Quarter almost every night. Let me know if you want to know of some cool places to go or if you need accoms if you visit the Big Easy!

NOW THIS WEEK:
Wednesday at 8pm I start a new jazz series at Romano's Restaurant at 4600 E Hastings in Bby. I should have some special guests show up, and even have a singer coming all the way from Australia!

Friday I bring my full five piece band into the 1789 Restaurant and Lounge (1789 Comox@Denman) at 8 pm for a show of concert style originals. Rezzies!

Saturday I return to my regular haunt at Ten Ten Tapas (1010 Beach Ave on seawall). I start at 7 pm  with some juicy jazz and expect a busy night with guests, patio, and yummy tapas. Rezzies!

      We disagree with the position that funding for class size and composition not be part of bargaining but for now settle all else and then continue negotiating.  Special education students or any type of learner can’t be blamed for the present underfunding we are facing in our schools. Teachers can’t be blamed and have shown flexibility and initiative to find a settlement. We want more supports for our special needs students as soon as possible.
      

      The problem is not with our special needs children and how to service them, as government continues to imply and muddles the waters but with the chronic erosion in funding impacting all classrooms. There has been a 12 year struggle to regain the funding that was taken away from all students resulting in unworkable learning and teaching conditions. Class size, composition and ratios to specialist workloads have worked well before government took that language away in 2002. Matching need with service is the best way to guarantee support for students and allow the classroom teacher to focus on all children. Schools require resource, learning assistance and integration teachers, psychologists, counselors, librarians, speech and language pathologists, English language teachers, music and drama teachers, Educational Assistants etc. to provide excellent and timely service to students.          

    Twice the courts found government wrong and ordered it to make amends and return that language. Now government continues to impose preconditions and not moving their position when teachers are. This is unacceptable to us as students, parents, teachers and taxpaying citizens. We all want schools to open as soon as possible. We demand that government lift the stumbling block to mediation (E80) which is that teachers sign away what they won in the courts. We urgently expect government to agree to binding arbitration and support public education, the cornerstone of our democratic society and future prosperity.
