Tongue & Groove

He's won a Juno. He's won two Canadian Smooth Jazz Awards. He's won a West Coast Music Award. And he's earned several Gold and Platinum albums throughout his career (which included a stint with the Powder Blues Band). So ... what does a boy who was born and raised in Denver, Colorado, but now calls Vancouver home, do next?

He jam-packs a fresh collection with so much talent you just know it's going to be something special. That's not to say that Gabe isn't special enough on his own. He most definitely is - whether it's trumpet, flugelhorn or flute, GMH is an unparalleled vibe-master, always discovering new ways to groove solidly in the pocket.

I'm proud to say I had a hand in picking the lead-off single "Chill@Will". Featuring Bob Baldwin - remember the guy at the Canadian Smooth Jazz Awards Saturday party whose keyboard dropped to the floor and so he dropped with it and just kept on playing? - this track is a delicious blend of funky groove and tasty textures.

Uber-producer (and guitar player) Paul Brown shows up for a spin with Gabe on "Heading North". Paul's unmistakable style (slick and smooth) melds perfectly with Gabe's urban sensibility. "Daahoud" with Chris Standring is another standout, as is "Slipstream Turbulence" featuring fellow Canadian Brian Hughes. I also absolutely adore Gabe's unique take on "Feels So Good" (extended version with Miles Black and Grant Geissman) - an old chestnut given new life with a contemporary twist.

I've known Gabe for a long time and he is not only one of the most exceptionally talented musicians in the biz, he is also a passionate and generous soul, two traits that permeate every note he plays. Tongue & Groove ramps up the maestro's mainstream/contemporary mastery at every turn. I've said it before: "What I love the most about Gabe is his utter fearlessness. Not one to ever rest on past grooves, he charts new and exciting territory with each new CD."

Tongue & Groove is no exception. Keep on grooving Gabe, and we will keep on loving you!

Gabriel Mark Hasselbach and his band rip through an exciting set at the 2017 TD Vancouver Jazz Festival, in a cool venue called Blue Martini. Performing with him are his longtime fav players: Miles Black (piano), Laurence Mollerup (bass), Phil Robertson (drums), and his 'since childhood' musical buddy Brian Monroney (guitar), who came all the way up from Seattle for this gig. The set included many of Gabriel's strongest live tunes, culled from his 14 albums, 10 Billboard hits, and 3 JazzWeek hits, plus his 2011 Canadian Smooth Jazz Awards  Album of the Year 'Told Ya So'.

Gabriel plays flugelhorn, flute, and trumpet on this set. You can find him at www.GabrielJazz.com

Back in 1988 I was part of a John Denver album session in Vancouver, produced by the iconic Roger Nichols (Steely Dan).

I only got to play on one tune, but it was a corker! I don’t recall all the other players but we had fun......

Jerry Sheff Bass James T Hardin piano James Burton guitar.. all from Elvis and Roy Orbison's band...and Daryl Burgess in drums.

Engineering genius Roger Nichols produced, and (maybe Tom Colclough on clarinet and Ralph Eppel on trombone).

I mounted a rooftop concert gratefully sponsored by Creative BC, to share my original material and to raise money for Reach Child & Youth Development Society and your contributions so far have added up greatly, thank you for your support! I've included information and a donation link for Reach Child & Youth Development Society https://www.reachchild.org/giving/. and at the bottom of this page is a short video from Director Kristin Bibbs, telling in more detail about the Reach program and its important function in our world.

Reach is a non-profit organization in Delta that helps children with special needs reach their full potential. The organization has been providing services to children and their families since 1959, and REACH provides timely, accessible, and supportive community programs and services for the Delta, Surrey, and Langley areas (BC). They promote optimal development and well-being for all children, youth, and adults, where all individuals flourish. REACH provides special programs to help with families and children challenged by Autism, and programs to help transition young Autistic adults into society.

Thanks to some of our donors, such as Phil Belanger, Tilden Webb, Bill and Char Shephard, Armi Grano, Michael Angelo, Lisa Dunn, Erv Schill, Trevan Wong, Sasha Dudnikoff, Alison Martin, Maggie Chamberlin-Holben, Linda Szentes, Glenn Riley. Alfie Zappacosta, and others.... thank you Creative BC and Showcase BC for ongoing support.

Here are songs from the concert, neatly cut into bite-size chunks with Chris Haas (drums), Tilden Webb (keys), Adam Rohrlick (guitar), and Gabriel (horns and flute).

Hi Friends,

There is a monster two highrise development proposed for our area at Boundary and Hastings, which exceeds height and density mandates by triple.
This Hastings corridor by the Cassiar Connector CANNOT withstand the extra traffic and street parking stress and is not supported with enough public transit. This density has only been allowed for intersections near SkyTrain stations in the past. We need your help!
The developer PCI will receive rents in perpetuity but are only willing to offer 94parking stalls on 200+ units. The Hastings corridor has been limited to 5 storeys for 50 years, and provides an unobstructed view-cone down Hastings to the elegant Vancouver skyline.

Few if any amenities are offered by the developer PCI, who seems to ram through every development with City Hall, who has never rejected any of their proposals. City Hall has been tallying ALL comments, and the developer's insiders have orchestrated a campaign to deluge City Hall with Comments of Support, so can you please take a minute right away to make a (hopefully) OPPOSED comment which will help not only us but all residents of Hastings-Sunrise.

Of course, we all want more rental housing, but the impact on this (our) neighbourhood will be extreme and untenable.

PLEASE HELP WITH THIS CAUSE, there is a time limit.

You do not have to be a resident of Hastings-Sunrise to help this cause, so jump in!

 Thanks in advance!

I had the honor and pleasure to be invited by Europe's best-known jazz impresario Christian Bössner, to perform in Portugal at the 4th Annual Algarve Smooth Jazz Festival in October 2019.

It was a fantastic 5 days with other well-known performers, such as Jeff Kashiwa, Brian Simpson, Blake Aaron, Kim Waters, Bobby Lyle, Paul Brown, Adam Hawley, Elan Trotman, Rick Braun, Gerald Veasley, Javier Colon, and Kayla Waters. His crew and production team made everything flow smoothly and included the lovely Jazz Hostess Sandra and her crew, as well as Rajko & Claudi Lienert, and Jorge Fonseca.

My performance spot was excellent, placed perfectly on the final day, on the warm and sunny seaside Main Stage. My band knocked it out of the park, so high marks to Orefo Orakwue (bass), Andrew Small (drums), Dave Ital (guitar), Steve Turner (keys), and Nelson Nunes (audio). My whole show is captured below, so sit back and dig into the solid and punchy vibes, all originals from many of my albums, including the latest MidCentury Modern Vol. 2, MidCentury Modern Vol. 1, Cool Down, Kissed By the Sun, Told Ya So, and more. All are available from Apple, Amazon, Spotify, with physical discs also from CD Baby, and WindtunnelRecords.

Gabriel Mark Hasselbach, trumpet/flugelhorn/flute/valve trombone; Miles Black, piano/organ/bass; Joel Fountain, drums; Cory Weeds, saxophone; Ernie Watts, saxophone; Gord Lemon, electric bass; Olaf DeShield, guitar; Laurence Mullerup, acoustic bass.

Trumpet master and multi-talented musician, Gabriel Mark Hasselbach opens with a tune called, “Superblue.” This composition is a super slick and straight-ahead, featuring Miles Black, brilliant on an attention-getting piano solo.

Gabriel is a gifted horn player who enjoys crossing genres and blending styles. He can play it all, from Bebop to R&B; Pop to Smooth jazz. The repertoire and melodies on this volume 2 “MidCentury Modern” production are catchy. They’re familiar. the horn lines punch bright, staccato lines that punctuate these unforgettable tunes. The Hasselbach arrangements are well-written. On the second track, “Driftin’, “Cory Weeds steps into the spotlight on saxophone and he swings hard. The 3rd track on this album proffers a Latin groove, combined with a straight-ahead jazz production that reminds me of the infectious music of the late, great Eddie Harris. Gabriel Mark Hasselbach records party jazz. His music makes me happy. You feel joyful energy and emotion from these musicians

In Hasselbach’s discography of fifteen album releases, there are only a few mainstream albums. Most of his music has been geared towards the contemporary jazz market. This has earned Hasselbach ten Billboard hits and an album of the Year and Instrumentalist of the Year Awards. I’m used to hearing albums that include Hasselbach’s original music and a more Smooth Jazz approach. However, Gabriel Mark Hasselbach is just as effective and prolific playing bebop and straight-ahead jazz as he is in the contemporary category. Gabriel explained, in his liner notes, the direction of his current album release.

“On this project, rather than recording predominantly original material as I often do, I chose soulful tunes from the 50’s and 60’s that have influenced me and have a timeless quality. This album is the complete me; a seamless melding of mainstream, contemporary and NOLA styles. … a trifecta of jazz where the sum is greater than the parts.”

On the familiar tune, “Jazz ‘n Samba” Gabriel Mark Hasselbach picks up his flute to add more spice to this already spicy Latin production. It’s unusual for a trumpet player to also master a reed instrument, but Hasselbach is not your usual suspect. He performs beautifully on the flute.

“This album is a tasty homage to the classic jazz flag-bearers I grew up listening to: Blue Mitchell, Carmell Jones, Horace Silver, Freddie Hubbard, Chet Baker, Stan Getz, Miles Davis, Lee Morgan, Jimmy Smith, Clifford Brown, Joe Gordon, Hank Mobley, Herbie Mann, Jobim and many others,” Gabriel Mark Hasselbach explains. “Jazz is in my bones and I am sure I’ll die clutching my horn to my chest.”

I am deeply moved by Gabriel’s interpretation of the very beautiful “Nature Boy” composition. On “Sister Sadie,” he reminds us of the genius of Horace Silver and his many hit jazz standard compositions, like this one. On the tune, “I’m Gonna Go Fishin’,” Hasselbach plunges his horn for a gritty, soulful effect and Mike Black uses an organ to embellish this production.
